Art & Other Creative Items

So this is the page I will dedicate to sharing new (and old) work! This is what I actually do sometimes... make things!

The first term of 2016 has passed, and I have some images and such to share with you.  So I have been working on a typographic installation for the last few weeks, which you can read up on here, but here are the sort of final images arrived at! So the main concept was how text can be more accessible as a language than art is, but also has text can be a largely inaccessible medium when used to make art.

I've also been working on a History of Art project about artworks and artefacts, and in relation to Brett Murray's Africa sculpture and the spirit spouses of the Baule people:

So over the last few days I've been feeling like doing quick little sketches that actually make me feel happy. So here are the final little drawings:

So these little sketches were inspired by positive quotes about art, and just about fun little sketches in general. I quite like the way they turned out.
So this is my first piece of 2016, and my very first commission (that was not commissioned by a family member!)

Well, I have been offline for far too long! I have some new video and art work to share with you dear readers. I have realised I have become a slacker at the very thing I am most passionate about, and that must surely change if I am to be an artist! So here is what I have been up to:

So in other news, my prints were featured with my fellow students in the Activate/Captivate exhibition at the Wits Art Museum! The exhibition is on until February 2016, so if you're around Braamfontein please go have a look!

So here is the "reworked" painting, which involved removing rather than adding more.

This was the first stage of another painting project about working from photographs, but it got a little... overworked...

So as you may have noticed... the next few images are paintings, which I have rediscovered my love for! The images below are all studies of an image I found online (via The Minimalists). The task was to complete 5 painterly studies of the image using a variety of techniques.
So I decided to continue the studies... Here is another study completed using only warm colours.
Chair study 7
Acrylic on Canvas
15cm x 15cm

And another study done using only warm colours and applying paint quite thickly
Chair Study 6
Acrylic on Canvas
15cm x 15cm
2015
And this was a drawing that was completed after the studies below had been done. We were given 5 minutes to draw a sketch of our image as faithfully as possible without being able to refer to the image itself

This was the mixed media study I completed, also without a preparatory drawing!
Chair Study 5
Acrylic Paint and Chalk Pastel on Canvas
2015
This was continuing the loosened style but focusing on one section of the painting
Chair Study 4
Acrylic on Canvas
15cm x 15cm

This is the third, and probably my favourite study! My lecturer told me to try and loosen up a bit, and this was the first outcome
Chair Study 3
Acrylic Washes on Canvas
15cm x 15cm
2015
This study was completed using only Burnt Umber and White, and was painted without a preparatory drawing as well as without me having my glasses on!
Chair Study 2
Acrylic on Canvas
15cm x 15cm
2015
This was the very first study and was intended to be quite faithful to the reference image to get back in a painting mood
Chair Study 1
Acrylic on Canvas
15cm x 15cm
This is a little stop motion video I made for my final video art project.
